PROCESS POST: Analytics, SEO and Audience Growth

Week 10: November 14 - 20

Google Analytics Data

The data that Google collects can be beneficial for several reasons. For example, from my data, I was able to see that, on average, a lot more people visit my site on Tuesdays compared to other days of the week. I think that is due to me tagging my blog post with the ‘Posiel’ tag and then them seeing it on the Posiel Aggregated Feeds during the lecture on Tuesday mornings. I can also see that on the days before Peer Reviews are due, I tend to have a lot more views on my pages as compared to other days. So I will continue with the practice of tagging my site with ‘Posiel’. Steve Pratt (2022) also discussed how it is easier and better to reach a more niche audience than go after a bigger audience that has lots of competition. So potentially, I could make my content more niche and try to integrate more niche keywords into my site to improve my SEO ranking and discoverability.

Issues with My Site

However, my average engagement time is less than 1 minute which means that people are not staying on my site for too long. The State of Mobile Report 2022 discusses how people are spending more and more time on their phones, so it is important that your website works smoothly and quickly on a mobile phone, or people will click off it. So after doing some research, I found that the mobile user experience on my site was not the best. There were a few images that were not loading, some headers were way too big, and the load time was not the best. Hollingsworth (2021) discusses how an important part of SEO is offering “users the information they are looking for in fewer clicks, quickly and easily.” Therefore those issues with my site are also likely hurting my SEO ranking. It is also possible my site is too text-heavy, and that is why people are clicking off. So maybe I could change my weekly progress blog posts into videos instead and maybe reduce the length of my process posts. So my goal for this week is to fix all those little issues on my website and see if it improves my average engagement time.

Social Media Integration

The State of Mobile Report 2022 states that “Apps in categories that are already highly relevant to Gen Z can be excellent partners to help you increase engagement, including Photo & Video, Entertainment, and Social.” So possibly, I could create a Youtube channel or TikTok account where I create videos on my weekly progress and link them to my blog instead of creating weekly progress blogs. I think this would definitely increase my reach and drive more people outside of PUB 101 to my site.
